Study of the AGM Minutes of the Seniors Section reveals that Maurice was the prime mover behind creating the Section in 1979. Maurice was the first Convenor of the Section and took on the task of organising the set up of the Seniors. He presided over the first AGM and, along with Pip Newlove and Peter Brown, laid down the rules and procedures for the Seniors, protocols which we pretty much follow to this day. His philosophy seems to have been “social golf with a competitive element”.
Maurice took on the task of, first of all, gaining permission to hold matches against other Clubs and, secondly, organising such fixtures, a post he held for some years. Maurice carried on with these responsibilities until he was elected as Seniors Skipper for the 1983 season.
Maurice’s first trophy success with the Seniors was when he won the Eclectic in 1983 with a score of 64 ½ points.
There are constant references in the Minutes of early AGMs to the contribution which Maurice made to the running of the Seniors Section. In sum, without the efforts of Maurice, the Seniors would not be where they are today.
Maurice died in 1996 at the age of 85. In early 2021, the Seniors Section was approached by members of Maurice’s family to indicate that they wished to present a trophy to be played for annually. This kind offer was gratefully accepted. Discussion within the Seniors Section resulted in the trophy being known as the Maurice Featherstone Memorial Trophy and it would be played for at the end of each season. Contestants for this prestigious trophy would be the winners of:
Laverack Cup
Each of the Qualifying Competitions
Savill Rosebowl
Order of Merit winner
Eclectic Winner
Vice-
The format would be 18 holes Stableford off 95% handicap.
The inaugural competition was held on Monday 4th October. 2021.
